Four years ago, the Base Realignment and Closure process selected Fort Lewis and McChcord Air Force Base as one of 12 sets of installations to be merged. Joint Base Lewis-McChord became a reality on February 1st, 2010 with a ceremony in front of the newly named "JBLM Lewis Main" headquarters. Joint Base Lewis McChord Commander Col. Thomas H. Brittain and Air Force deputy, Col. Kenny Weldon, raised the new JBLM Garrison flag. By their side senior NCO's Command Sgt. Maj. Matthew Barnes and Chief Master Sergeant Frederick Wade from JBLM. Airmen and Soldiers have long served side by side, cooperating towards the common goal of supporting and defending our nation. The joint base Lewis-Mcchord ceremony marked the beginning of Initial operational capability for the joint base. The transition period will last eight months until Oct 1st when full operation capability is complete.
